Railway North Of Wanganui Subsides
WAXGAXUI, August 4. ' A subsideiHo in the railway line about a milo nortli of Kai Iwi. believed to involve several chains of line, has closed the Aramoho-Maxwell section of the fNew Plymouth line indofinitely. The main portion of the subsidence occurred last night just before the south-bound Xew Plvmouth-V ellington railcar was due and an aecurate estimate of the extent of the damage will not be possible until morning. A slip oeeurred on the line near Maxwell on Wednestlav night and after this had been cleared, the subsidence occurred over abour four chains of traek. Earlv yesterday morning Tailwav maintenance and construction gangs were able to effect temporary repairs to euable the uortli-bound New Plvmoutli express to get through although for a while it was expected it might be necessarv tn tranship passengers. The line was kept intact until just before the arrival of the southbound railcar when a further subsidence. occurred, completelv closing the line. Passengers from the railcar -disembarked at Maxwell and were taken from there to Wellington in buses.
