July In Otaki Was Mild But Wet Month
The total rainfall recorded in Otaki for the month of July was 787 points, with rain on 18 days. In 1948 the rainfall totalled 543 points for 19 rainy days. The heaviest fall during last month was on the 27, when a total of 128 points were recorded by Mr. F. H. Critchley, Tasman Beach. Snow fell on the ranges but once, an'd the severest 'of three frosts was. one of six degrees. An electrical storm, with heavy thunder
and vivid lightning flashes was experienced during the 8 and 9, while an earthquake shock . was felt at 6.10 p.m. on the 4. More wind was experienced than has been the case during the last three months, but generally the force of the wind was light. Altogether eight frosts were experienced last year, some of them heavy. Generally speaking, the month was a miid one and evidence of this is furnished by the early flowering of some fruit trees, while complaints regarding the early appearance of house flies and other similar nuisances support this claim.
