Contempt That Led To Tragic Death
INVERCARGILL, August 4. "I have no doubt Mr. Sutherlaud was an experienced pilot but the evidence leads me to believe that, just aa in everythipg ~ else, constant usage leads to a certnin amount of contempt. I fear that the familiarity whieh breeds contempt, led to the present accident, " f said the Coroner, Mr. W. A. Harlo-w, at an inquest today into the death s ot four people which occurred when a Percival Proetor aircraft crashed at the Invercargill Airport on Sunday, June 5. The victims of the crash were Neal Cook Sutherland, his wife Gwenda Margaret Ann Sutherland, David William Farquharson and Bichard Ernest Mansiield, all of Dunedin. The Coroner added that Sutherland was in sole control of the machine at •the time of the accident. The machine was in sound condition. The aircraft attempted a manoeuvre that could not be undertaken safely at the speed and height which the machine had attainod at the time. The machine was loaded in excess of the total authorised and in any case tbq manoeuvre attempted wao not "of the kind that was prudent fot the type of aircraft.
