Australian Badminton Players Thrilled Large Crowd
— ♦ Despite adverse weather conditions, the Horowhenua College assembly hall was packed to capacity for the match between the visiting Australian badminton team and Horowhenua last week. Although Horowhenua did not win a rubber, members of the team acquitted themselves well against piayers of such experience and will profit greatly as a result of the games.
Detailed resuits of the games played are as follows, the Austra'ian piayers being mentioned first in each instance: — Men's singles: Allan McCabe beat L. J. Stap'es, 15 — 3, !f> — 8; Arthur McCabe beat J. N. Bryant, 15—4, 15—5. " ~ Ladies' singles: Miss E. Peacock beat Miss M. Karauti, 11 — 2; Miss J. Puller beat Mrs. W. Phil.ips, 11 —2, 11—2. Men's doubles: McCabe and McCabe beat Staples and Bryanc, 15 — 2. 15—8. Ladies1 doubles: Misses Puller and Peacock beat Miss Karauti and Mrs. Phl lips, 15 — 8, 15 — 3. Combined doubles: Allan McCat€ and M;ss Puller beat M. Staples and Miss J. Piggott, 15—3, 15 — 4; Arthur McCabe and Miss Peacock beat Bryant and Mrs. Phiilips, 15—6, 15—5. During the course of the evening the Horowhenua captain, J. N. -Bryant, introduced the association's patron, Dr. S. J. Thompson, who
welcomed the visitors and congratulated the association on its initiative in arranging for such' prominent piayers to visit the district. Replying on behalf cf the visitors, the manager of the team," Mr. Bert. Tonkin, expressed pleasure -at the manner in which the team had been received by the spectators. Mr. Tonkin then exp'ained -.'he different strokes as the McCabe Brothers demonstratcd them. Arian McCabe showed an uneanny ability, in returning the shu t'e toi wherever he was directed. This exhibition was well received. 1 The highlight of the evening was 1 an impromptu game between the McCahe Brothers, who are thei Australian men's doubles champions, and ex-Australian representative Bert. Tonkin partnered by Horowhenua's top-ranking player, L. Staples. The thrilling net due's at times brought the onlookers to their toes. Later the visitors were entertaiped at supper and. the following dgy they left by car for Wellington. - |
