Chess Club Will Welcome New Members

The Levin and District Chess C'.ub is continuing to grow, now having a membership of 21. The club has applied for affiliation with the N Z. Chess Association and has been invited to send pl2.yers to take part in the annua1 match, Wellington v. Provinces, early in October. A very promising young player, Jim Larsen, who is well up the club ladder, has been entered in the secondary schoo.'s tourney, to be hei'd in Welling on during the forthcoming school holidays. A recent event was a consultation game between two teams, in adjoining rooms, with a runner moving between them. This was much enjoyed, everyone learning somelhing new. The c'ub is meeting this month in the Red Cross Room on Monda.y evenings at 7.30 p.m. Learners or piayers who have had little ex-

perience are esnecially welcome. One of the main objects of the club is to improve the standard of play. and it is hoped to run a series of short lecturettes on the strategy and tacvics of the game, theory of openings and so on.

though an accurate scorer herself, is convent to manoeuvre her two supporters into good positions to shoot a goal. | A though at one stage Te Kawau held the lead. the Horowhenua team showed no slaekening of pur|p:se and • he game ended 19 — 13 in their favour. B Team's Good Play. The Horowhenua B team at first seemed. to be caught napping and Te Kawau B had them down seven goals before H Arowhenua were able to pentrate their defences. Horpwhenus. ',hen moved into the attack. Their chief fault seems to have been a change of tactics from their usual swift, c'ean tcss to a lob pass. Te Kawau piayers had the advantage of height and the Horowhenua veam, feering that their usual short quick pass would not succeed, tried to lob the ba i over their oppon-ents' heads. Fortunately, Horowhenua realised their mistake and reverted to their usual method of piay. They are young piayers, nimble on their feet and what they lacked in height they mafle up in speed. The game ended 11-all, a praisewoixhy effort. In this game the forwards lacked combination, seeming to forget much of their coaching. They failed to realise that good^positional play will- bring the forward jinto a position to shoot with less danger of interception from the opposirion than a lot of useless and tiring passing from player to player. Special mention must be made of vhe splendid. defence work of A. Jacobs and V. Fogden, whose anticipation and rapid follow up when one movement broke down saved their team many times. A Jacobs, unfortunateiy, has one grave. fault; she obstructs her opponent. If she I can correct this she will be one of . the oustanding p ayers of the dis- , fcrict.
