Received Wednesday, i p.m. NEW YORK, August 2. A new naval exfiedition to the Ant: arctic, headed by Rear-Admiral Byrd, is planned for later in the year. The New York Times' military expert, Major llaiison Baldwin, stated today that about 3500 men aud eight ships were earmarked for the expedition which would have as its objective the mappiug of a vast area of uuknown territory iu Antarctica about as big as Europe. If present plans were finally approved, the first ship would sail in October. The expedition would establish an advanee base in New Zealand and Would remain in the Antaretic for about four months of the south poiar summer and return to the United States about April, 1950.
