STORM WATER DRAINAGE
Ccuncil To Seek Permission For Scheme To Pfoceed The Levin Borough Council is to inquire into the possibility of securing a requisition from the Health Department to assist it in an approach to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to proceed with its storm water drainage project. This decision was reached at a meeting of the council lasc night when the town's storm water and fyater race problems were ventilated with particular reference. to "Ihe urgency of the situation in the King's Drive-Tiro Tiro Road and Roosevelt Street areas: In regard to the water races, it was stated that this was the cause of the greater, part of Levin's storm water trouble and that an approach should be ma'de to the Horowhenua County Council to see if the eiimination of water , races courd be brought about. With. this in view it was proposed that a deputation meet the county council at its next meeting. The discussion started with a report from Cr. R. A. Frederikson on the trouble in the King's DriveTiro Tiro Road area and his recommendation that the drainage pipe there be lowered to facilitate the clearance of the storm water. It was poirited out, . however,. that a difficulty would lie in the fact that a water main was beneath this pipe. Drawing attention to the urgency of the situation in Roosevelt Street, Cr. A. J. H. Allen detailed the extent of the flooding there and the complaints heing received from residents in= the Tocality. He said he thought that any temporary scheme would be only "puddling around" with the situation, and he wouM support expeditingAthe permanent scheme for the whole borough. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, said that as he saw the situation the borough's storm water scheme should not wait until the sewerage scheme went in and that, as in the case of the acquiring of the sewerage pipes in advance by special permission from Treasury, an approach should be made to see if the borough's storm water scheme could be proceeded with before next winter. If all approaches failed the council should, if necessary, go to the Minister himself so urgent was the prablem in Levin. This met with a favourable re-t ception from councillors and a motion was passed as stated above.
