Local and General

Personal. Mr. and Mrs. Munro, of Stout Street, were weekend visitors to Wellington. Mrs. B. Hateley, of Mangaore, has returned home after spending the weekend as the guest of her daughter at Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Campbell, of' Vance Street, returned home yesterday afternoon after two weeks. with.their son, Mr. J. Campbell, in the Wairarapa district. Mr. J. Calder, who has been spending the weekend in Shannon, left yesterday on a business visit to Palmerston North prior to returning to Stewart Island later this week. Few Early Lambs. Although August is considered td be weirinto the lambing season, there are very few lambs about. A few have made their appearance on East Road farms and others have been seen in the Opiki district. Dairy farmers on the other hand are away to an early start and the collections of bobby calves. have been high over the past few weeks. Cycle Track Repairs. After maxing several. attempts to carry out repair work to the domain cycle track, members of the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club have decided to postpone any further attempts in the meantime. However, should the weather be favourable a working bee will be held next Sunday, as there is much work to be done in preparing the track for_the coming season. Trees Being Pruned. The large trees in the beautifying areas and along the main streets are receiving their annual pruning and look much tidier after their treatment. Unfortunately, very unfavourable weather conditions have prevented much outside work being done by the council and citizens, with the result that the town's appearance is not quite attractive as usual. Credit must be given, however, to the borough foreman, Mr. W. Robinson, for his interest in the town's appearance, especially over the weekend when the streets are now free of rubbish and other unsightly matter. With the coming of the fine weather citizens will renew their enthusiasm .and Shannon will soon become its picturesque self again.
