Chinese Scientist For New Laboratory
AUCKLAND, July 31. Scientitic and medical research ir New Zealand will soon be greatly as sisted by the establishment in Dunedin of a micro-chemieal laboratory, the •first of its kind in this country. It wil be set up at the Universitv of Otagand the lecturer appointed to it, Dr. T S. ATa, arrived at Auckland from Syd ney by air on Saturday. A - Chinese uational* Dr. A'la, who is accompanied by his wife and yonng son, graduated doc, toi' of philosophy at the TJniversity ot Ohicago and was in charge of the mic ro-chemical laboratory there during tlu war. When he returned to China in 1946 he was appointed professor oi chemistrv at the National Pekin Universitv, Peiping, and a few months ag becanie visiting professor at Lingnar University, Canton. Tlie main advantage of a micro-chem cal laboratory is that it uses only very j small amounts of material, said Dr. Ma What is used is measured in milligrammes or 30,000th part of an ounce. Although she prefers to be regarded as Mrs Ala, Dr. Ma's wife is also a doctor of philosophy of the University 1 of Chicago. She received her degree for ■ work done in social services administration. Dr. and Alrs Ma leave by air fo Dunedin tomorrow.
