Oranges Arrive. In the past few days three ships have arrived at Auckland with over 30,000 cases of oran~g''3. About 13,000 of these are for the Auckland city and suburban area. The Monowai brought 2100 -cases on Tuesday, and on Friday the Kaitoke arrived with 15,000 cases and the Lautoka with 14,500. "Beat The Pistol." "It is always a bad thing to beat the pistol," Mr.,,J. H. Luxford, S.M., lin the Auckland Court, told a man who appeared before him charged with a breach of his pro'hibition order. Defendant, who admitted having some. bottled beer in his possession affd -having had drinks, said the prohibition order was due to expire in a" fortnight. "It was still an order," Mr. Luxford commented, imposing a fine of £2. Crutching Saies. The wool auction saies advisory committee announced over the weekend that crutching saies are to be resumed on Thursday, August 4, at Wellington when the Napier catalogue, together with half the Wanganui catalogue, will be offered. Estates to the value of £719,807 were accepted for administration by the Public Trustee during the month of June, 1949. New business for the three months en'ded June 30 was £2,016,289. Grants of administration .made by the cdurt in favour of the Public Trustee numbered 153 for the month. The steady increase in the number of wills held 011 behalf of living testators is continuing and at the end of June over 145,000 wills were held. Government Telephones. Government otficials apparentjy ralk a lot. Nearly 2 per cent of tne telephone connexions in Auckland are to Government department buildings — and this does not include extensiori lines. Telephone lines listed under • tlie 62 Government 'departments in the telephone directory total.571 and one department — the Post and Telegraph— has 160 of them. Total line connexions to City exchanges number 30,201 and extensions 15,526. Population Increases. With an increase of 9100 during the year ended March 31, Auckland's population is now just short of 300,000. The rate of growth was greater than that of Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin combined. Compared with Auckland's 9100, these three cities recorded an increase together of 8800. Releasing these figures at the weekend, the Government Statistician in Wellington also shows that Hamilton, seventh ih the list of New Zealand cities, has topped the 30,000 mark. Apart from the four main centres, the only other cities above this ligure are Palmerston North and Invefcargill.
