• AUCKLAND, July 28. The stripped and empty hui! of the veteran cruiser Philoinel is still iu Coromandel ■ Harbour after an unsuecessful attempt to ,sink the old shij) on Wednesdav. Refloated from the sand bank on, which she. had' lain while the shipbreakers were at- work, the Philome! was towed'out of Coromandel at dawn. Hoyever, strong northerly weather in the Firth of Thames forced the ships to put baek to harbour later in the morning. The sinkiug will take place as soon as tlie weather moderates. Under-the supervision of the Marine Department, the luilk will be towed beyond' Cuvir Island and the hull holed bv the firing of two gelignite charges. The naval demolition party which was to have undertaken this task, is no longer available and it will now be carried out.by the Strongman Shipping Uo. which purchased the cruiser from the Navy for scrapping 18 months ago.
