North Auckland Now Named Northland
WHANGAREI, July 29. 7 The Mim'ster of Lahds has conflrmed the decision of the Geographical Board that .the area CQrnprising the seven northern counties of New Zealand shall be offlcially designated Northland instead of North Auckland. This is the culmination of a campaign extending over many years, the contention being that this large and important part of the Dominion should be accorde'd «a distinctive identity. The counties concerned^ are Mingctnui, Whangaroa, Hokianga, ■Bay of Islands, Hobson, Whangarei and Otamatea. Coincidentaliy with receipt of news of the Minister's decision yesterday, Northlanders heard for the first time the radio announcement, "Radio Northland speaking," this being part of the trial of the new station to be opened at Whangarei next month.
