Feeding Is The Secret To More Production

"TTie average per cow of butterfat' is not the whble answer. Production per acre is the test," said Mr. T. G. Vincent, chairman of directors of the Levin Dairy Company, speaking at the annual meet--ng of the company on Thursday. There .was surely an answer" for increased production, he qontinued. It had been seen that throuah the years there was a gradual increaise in production coming into 'ihe factory up till September. From September to October it seemed, to remain static or even dropped. This appeared to indicate that there was not a smficient allowance of feed provided to carry the cows on till the real fiush arrived. This would resul-t in the production of more butter and an accordingly bigger return for the suppier. Hence the suppliers should look to the questipn of feeding their stock. Mr. Vincent preceded these remarks by referring to. a circular from the Herd Testing Association, showing the dairy factories' return from 22,000 herds in the North Island. It was not exactly good reading, he added. It could be seen, he said, that from 592 herds the production proved less than 120 lbs. of butterfat per cow. The remarkable thing was that only 368 herds out of 22,000 had a production of over 300 lbs. of butterfat per cow. The Levin district's average was 230 lbs. of butterfat per cow — a figure which it should not be proud of.
