Shannon Borough Affairs
The Deputy Mayor, Cr. B. Clayton, presided over the' fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening. Also in attendance were Crs. V. J. Bateman, R. S. Downes, L. G. Sayer and C. G. Wishart. Apologies for ahsence were received from the Mayor, Mr. D. "A. Fitzgerald, an'd Crs; C. M. Cronquest and H. Aitchison. A request was received from Messrs W. H. Gunning and Co. for permission to shift their explosive magazine from its present site in Nathan Terrace to the unformed portion of Thompson Street, adjacent to a section owned by the company in Bryce Street, until such time as the borough required this portion of roadway. It was pointed out that the risk would he no greater with the magazine on this site than on the present property, as the explosives stored there would be in quantity and conditions as the Chief Inspector of Explosives deci'ded. It was agreed to hold the matter over until the next meeting so that an inspection eould he carried out. The Commissioner of Transport wrote asking if the council was prepared to approve of the use on the borough roads of a dragline owned by the Manawatu Catchment Board. It was stated by the commissioner that the weight of 16i tons was in excess of the statutory weight limts, but such a vehicle was obviously necessary for the work of the board and he was prepared to recommend the Minister to approve the use of this Vehicle. This matter was also held over until the next meeting. Cr. Sayer reported on a recent meeting of local bo'dies held in Palmerston North. He was accorded a vote of thanks for his report. .The chairman of the domains committee, Cr. Clayton, reported that the gap in the domain fence had been repaired and some trees planted in the domain. Other trees in the borough required pruning and he suggested that a man foe engaged for- two weeks to carry out this work. The matter was left in . Cr. Clayton's hands for attention. Damage to one of the doors on the 'domain pavilion was reported by Cr. Bateman. This matter and others pertaining to the pavilion were left in his hands for attention. Cr. Bateman also reported that applications for building permits, which amounted to a total of £410, were in order and5 the necessary permits were granted by the council. The acting-chairman of the library committee, Cr. Downes, reported that a satisfactory revenue had been received from the rental section of the library since making his report two weeks ago. A further supply of new books was at hand and these would -add'to the attraction of the rental section.* The chairman of the works committee, Cr. Sayer, state'd that work had been concentrated on the stree'ts and the grader had been in use. An inspection of the work carried out in front of Mr. W. Gardiner's property would be made. Other works were receiving attention. On the motion of Cr. Sayer, it was resolved that the chief sanitary engineer of the State Housing Department be asked to visit Shannon and discuss the matter of State house dr'ainage with the council. Accounts totalling £255 ls -8d were passed for payment.
