Horticultural Society Has Full Year's Work
A full programme of work in that three shows had been held during the year' was commented on by the president, Rev. E. T. King, at the annual meeting of the Levin Horticultural Society, held on Tuesday night and well ,attended by members. It wa^ pleasing to note, he added, that while the entries' had shown a slight decrease numericaliy, there had been-' a decided improvement in the slandard of the exhibits, which was the society's main object., Sections had been provided in the rose and dahlia classes for Royal Society members, continued the president, but the result had been disappointing. Thes gladioli section at tne autumn show had been a complete failure. This beautiful fiower would nave been much in absence had it not been for Mr. H. Sulith's display of b.ooms. It was to be hoped that the newly-formed gladiolus club would provide mere exhibits for this much-neglected section. The balance sheet showed that a small deficit * of £2 had resulted from the working of the shows, said the report. The figures of the capital account had been reduced during the year by about £40. This was >accounted for by 'the Rurchase of timber for repairs and replaeements. The committee had decided to introduce the trestle system for shows and this had made a considerable improvement" for staging exhibits and in the storage of the equipment when it was not required.
Concluding, Mr. Kings thanked Messrs M. H. Boyce, H. Smith and A. O. Powell for their work on the furniture, the manager and boys of the Levin Training Centre for the helpful service, members oi the' committee, the secretary (Mr. Powell) and the treasurer, Mrs. H. W.
