Gorge Road Closed For Several Days
Seven chains of hare, rocky hillside looking down on to the niotorway ttirough tlie Manawatu Gorge has become a serious danger to traffic becanse of constantly descendnig rocks, and until the menace is removed the Gorge v/ill remain closed to all traffic. This information was nniKmneed last night hy the Works l'opartment overseer at the Gorge, Mr. C. Olivecrona. Mr. Olivecrona said -that it was fxtremely fortnnate there had been no serious accident because of the fn'hng boitlders. Seven chains of the hillside, laid hare hy the flres of last s o. iner, presented a spectacle oi (amo, precariousiy poised houlders. It would take a gang of his men five to seven days to clear the hill oi houhi ers and this would he a major Ioh. There waS no hush to hold the hillside. -Hotorists are advised that they should detour via the Saddle Road. Saddle Eoad Dangers. The Saddle Eoad Was a danger hines, said memhers of MhnaWat\t A.a. last night. There were several e rners Which. made driving difficult! and the bridge on the Hawke's Bay Piid oi the road was oi'ten under wnter at flood times. The hridge was also placed at such an angle that it was aimost impossible to negotiate with a caravan.
