SHANNON OUTPLAY OTAKI
Shannon showed superior eombination and their team-work was pleasing to watch when they carried too many guns for the home side in the clash at. Otaki Domain. The visitors won by three tries and a penalty goal to one penalty goal. An early penalty awarded the visitors brought no reward, and the first willing rush sawFuller, at fullback, bustled into kicking baekwards and Otaki were within inches of scoring, the ball just rolling out at the corner flag to sa.ve a certain try. A penalty kick by T. Gray gave Otaki a further opportunity to open the scoring, but although very close no points were secured. Another try looked imminent, but Poutou saved nicely. The same player looked dangerous on attack immediately after, but Foster stopped Ifim. A superb passing rush, in which every Shannon back handled, saw the ball returned to Poutu, who had starfced the move. He stab-kicked " and followed through to score a smart try. Fuller missed the kick. Huff next thrilled spectators with an attefnpt to kick a goal from, the half-way mark, the ball falling just under the bar. Later a penalty saw Cafiesen increase the visitors lead to 6—0, and the spell ended. Foster showed up in some . lively sprints in the second spell, 'but there was no one to support him when Poutu grounded him. Fuller narrowly missed a. field goal and a reverse saw Otaki awarded a penalty, This time Gray was successful, landing a nice goal, Shannon 6, Otaki 3. Shannon~forged ahead when -their backs got going again, and Moynihan and Newton both secured tries for the side when they out-generalle'd the defence by dummying and side-stepping. Callesen and Fuller missed the kicks and full time saw the visitors with a lead of 12 — 3. Mr, c. E. Wiseley ■ was the referee.
