The lirst tivo /ar,e the areas west and east of the' Tokomaru River and the third is the Mangaore drainage area. In the area west of the Tokomaru it is proposed to mahe improvements to 7S0 chains of drain. Tliis includes the iutersecting channel, Akers', Seifert's, Doherty's, Campbell's, tlie Old Main Drain aud the Makerua Draiu. The total cost of this area will be £5000. In the second area east of the Tokomaru the improvements will mainly be bank repairs and drainage and will cost about £910. Drainagp repairs in the Mangaore area will cost about £500'. . ' ., ' When the improvement proposals havo been discussed by the Drainage Board at their next meeting they will be sent on, to . tlie Mana>^atu Cateliment Board toge'ther with 1a plan of the area and later to' the Works Department for appro.vaJ. The work will be started as soon as a siibsidy1 lias been granted and will probably take two seasons. This plan, which lias beeh in the minds of board members ior some time, entails the taking over of about two miles of private drain by the board. Most of the work will be done . by machine and as little as possible ! labour will be employed. Mr. P. V. Tucker, overseer, reported tliat owing to the wet conditions and the high level of drains, little prcfgress had been made with the cleaning of drains during the past montli. The work had been mainly confined to dragging from the top and keeping the water moving by these meaus. Akers' drain north had been partly cleaned throughout and a fairly even flow kept. The Old Main Drain north had been dragged to Campbell's Drain. Ivemp's Lagoon and Smitli-'a/Drain ,,ha£U, yet to be cleaned. Loc.a} Rooding hadf occurred in the A'shleh ^Road' ' area, "the Olid Main Drain area and also on the eastern side of . thcs: Tokonj.aru ^ti'eatn. All the fiood pumps had been kept runnirig but some trouble had been gxperieneed with the starting controls of the 25 h.p. motor ih; the Makerua drainl plant.
