Sent To Gaol For Three Months
Jerry Heremai Pakai, of no fixed abode, appeared in the Police Court, Otaki, on Tuesday and was sentenced by Messrs. H. B. Edhouse and W. McBeth, J.P.'s, to three months' hard labour on a eharge of theft. Arriving in Otaki on Monqay morning, Pakai attempted to borrow money from a visitor. Mr. J. D. Stratton, at the Railway Hotel. His request was refused and shortly after Mr. Stratton noticed Pakai with a camera, which he thought he recognised. He promptly inspected his room at the hotel and found that, in addition to the camera, a shirt and his best suit were missing. The police were notified and after a search Pakai was promptly apprehended by Sergeant W. S. Hughes and Constable A. Hobbs, who related these facts to the Bench. Accuse'd, when arrested, had no money but was also in possession of a silk scarf and a fur cape. The fur cape was apparently made from opossum skins and had a large tailpiece. Pakai used it for a hat winding it round his head. The prosecution contended that it "did not improve his app^arance any."
