Council Divided On War Memorial Project

^ Four notices of motion in regard to the war memorial project appeared on the agenda at last night's meeting of the Otaki Borough Council. Only one was proceeded with. It was moved by Cr. E. J. Cook and seconded by Cr. N. D. Anderson and asked the council to rescind earlier decisions made supporting the proposed site for a war memorial and sports area. Many reasons were given by the mover and seconder, chief of which was the shortage of houses and the subsequent loss of revenue to the borough if a large area was taken in the centre of the town. The Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, supported the notice of motion. Crs. H. W. Hakaraia, J. Retter and G. McKinley opposed the motion, which was defeated when put to the vote, Cr. K. Am.es also voting against. Listening to the business of the council were three members of ihe public.
