Early History Of Wrecked Hyderabad

■' To the Editor) ^ Sir, — As a grand-daughter of the late Captain Holmwood, I was very interested in an' article published in "The Chronicle" on the 71st an-. niversary of the wreok of the Hyderabad. There seems to he a misconception that the ship was built for an Indian rajah. This is not so; she was built by Duncan, of Glasgow, for Thomas Stephen and Company, London, and later with two sister ships was attached to the Liverpool and Philadelphia Steamship Company of which my grandfather was a part owner. The Hyderabad was a full rigged ship of 1349 tons, 230 feet long with .. a beam.of 37 feet. She carried a . crew of 32 and there were six passengers on board — my grandmother ' wi'th one child and a governess, Mr. T. Anderson, Mr. J. Sherman and the wife of the ship's carpenter, who was stewardess, The late Captain • Worrall, of the Union Steamship Company, was an apprentice. Mr. Griffith, a carrier in Wellington, was an able seaman. Angus McLeod, the wheelman, had his leg broken when the ship struck and the captain was bruised by being tnrown against the mast. They were the only casualties. My grandfather retired from the sea and after spending a v yeqr in Wellington took up farming at Masterton. My father, Mr. Bernard Holmwood, residing in New Plymouth, is the only member of the family surviving. Yours etc., (MRS.) B. S. MUDGWAY. Levin, July 13.
