Roadside Rubbish Dumping Brings Complaint

The fact that rubbish was being dumped on the roadsides at both Waikanae and Hokio .Beach areas was the subjectof a complaint from the Levin branch of the Federate'd Farmers to the Horowhenua County Council. In a letter which w&s read at this month's meeting of the council, the branch stated that. rubbish was also being dumped in the Ohau River. « It asked that aetion be taken to prevent the continued marring of the countryside. The engineer, Mr. W. H. Fraser, said that 90 per cent of the rubbish complained bf. carne from the Levin borough. The. borough council's pit was only open fOr two days in the week and he thought that if .it was available every day of the week the, trouble tcvould

largely cease. The chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, said that Ihe enginder should be instructed to tighten up. on the matter. The county clerk, Mr. F. H. Hudsqn, commented that that would be a difiicult matter for the engineer, as- the dumping was done mainly when no one was about. • Cr. J. D. Aitchison said that the council should prosecute the first offender cauglit, and the people in the area could largely assist % naming offenders if they saw them. Instances of rubbish being dumped at people's front gates in the Manakau area was also mentioned.
