N.Z. Crayfish As Dollar Earners
AUCKLAND, July 32. The export of crayfish tails to the United States was earning v.aluable idollars for New Zealand, said Mr J. G. McLelland, an American, wlio hfis been paying a business visit to Australia and • returned to New Zealand by the Monowai. Shipments to Ameriea were made every two months and during the first 12 months of the industry's operations, GOOjOOOlbs of crayfish dr 1,S00,000 tails had been expOrted. Because of the unlimited mark-et- -in the United States for crayfish, it had been decided to increase the number and size of the fishing fleets in operation in New Zealand, continued Mr McLelland. Within the next 12 months, the fishing grounds, which were cotifmed at present to the Marlborough Bounds area near Picton, would be ex tended to the West Coast areas as far south as Milford Sounds. It was lioped this would double the amount availabL for export. One man in the United Sta tes had agreed co take up to 10,000,000 lbSo of crayfish each year.
