Early Morning Fire At Air Force Station

CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. Wakensd by a corporal who escape'd from his cubicle through a window, young trainees quickly evacua'.ed a barrack room in which fire brcke out at the R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Wigrarn, early this morning. The building was b'azing 'fierceiy when the alarm was given ,and it was on'y strenuous work by ithe station fire team that confined the fire to two rooms and corridor. "I think I was lucky to get out," said Corporal E. T. Carroll, surveyiing the gutied ruins of his cubicle. iHe lost everything except his battle 'dress, which he grabbed from a hook on the door as he ciambered through the window. Thirty boy trainees were sleeping in one wing of the barrack b'ock, but Corporal CarroT was 'the only occupant of the wing in which the fire broke out, the other rooms being used as lecture and recreation rooms. The fire is telieve'd to have originated in the switchboard, which is located in a baggage room across the corridor from Corporal Carrol's cubic'e.
