Dangers Force Closing Of Opencast Mines
Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. LONDON, July 12. As the result of the discovery of many old workings and unexpectea t'aults in the seams, the Ministry ot Fuel has discontinued openeast ^ coal operations in several parts of bouth Y orkshire and has closed down a number of workings. Production in the area has fallen by more than 100,000 tons in the past nine weeks. "The loss is serious particularly at a time when every ton of» coal is urgently needed to off'set delieiences in the deep pits, " said a Ministry spokesman.
