New Railway Proposal

GISBORNE, July 13. While he could hold out little hope of an early start on the construction of the northern railway between Matawai and Taneatua, the assistant engineer-in-chief of the Works Ministry, Mr. R. T. Smith, of Wellington, said it was obvious that the line would be completed at some time when the labour and materials were more readiiy available. ^He gave an assurance that a reconnaissance survey of likely routes woufd be made in the near future. His comments followed the completion yeSi/erday of a reconnaissance by car and on foot of a party of# Gisborne and Opotiki business men and farmers on the possible routes.
