WANT VOTE FOR 18-YEAR-OLDS
WELLINGTON, July 5. The New ' Z'ealand Eederation oi' Young- People 's Clubs, in " a statement to the Press, says that preparation fGF war can only mean a vote of no. cofilktenee in United Nations. 1 states that neither Canada nor Austra' lia introduced conscription. The takin;. of young nien out of industry would mean a tremendous loss in produc.tioi at a time when the world was crying ,out for food, and would interfere witli students and youth education and ap prentieeship training. While supporting the principle of a referendum, the statement does nol agree that it is democratic because the 18 to 21-year-olds who are immediatelv affeeted, lia\;e no vote, and adds that the proposed referendum is a clear example of the ne(ed for the 18-year-old vote. It complains that the opponents of conscription have not been given Ihe opportunity to voice views on the radio.
