GREYMOUTH, July 6. The long- standing custom ih the Coast and coal mines of "greasing" newcomers to the job as an initiation ceremony, and also retiring employees, is viewed seriously by the courfc. This was emphasised hy the magistrate, Mr. F. F. Reid, in the Juvenile Court, Greymouth, this morning when three young mine workers appeared on a charge of assaulting another. The management was perturbed at ihe persistence of this "revoltIhg" ciustom and though it was a iong ctanding practice, the court was not prepared -to view it lightly, said the magistrate, imposing a fine of £2 and ordering payment for damage to complainanUs clothes. It was pointed out that com-p-lainant had been "treated" three times and the magistrate wamed that a repetition of the practice would bring a more substantial penalty. ' .
