Two Valuable Brood Mares Destroyed

MASTERTON, Julv 4. Two brood mares from Mr. T. R. George's stud at Masterton had to be destroyed this mormng following their receiving severe injuries when they fe'l ir.to an open fcridge 400 yards from the Masterton rail-, way station. During the night a gate into their ' paddock was left open and the mares got out along the rahway line. The driyer of a goods train from Cross Creek saw the horses ■ along the line. One, Matarma Rose, owned by Mr. George, had its legs through the sleeners on a small bri-dge and was blocking the line. The mare had to be shot before the line could be cleared. The brood mares were valued at about £2000.
