The adoption by the Government o the Masterman Report upon politiea activities of niembers of the civil scr vi'-e means that" in future 666, 00( lower grade civil servants will be frer to stand for Parliament or indulge ir political activity, compared with tln Soo.uno to whom this right extended a' present. Members of the senior gradei of Ihe civil service and certain speci fied rategories, will, however, continm .to be barred. The number affected v about 47o.nno. Workers free to indulge in politiea activitv will not now be compelled t( Vesign if tliey decide to stand for Par liament and nced not do so at all un lcss they are snccessful. They will b given a month's lioliday to fight tlieii campaigns and will be entitled to re instaternent in the civil service if the\ ccase to be M.P. 's within a period o' five. ycars. For instance, civil servicf stenographers cannot take part in poli tics but a civil service niessenger o; a postman can.
