A Tramper's Logbook

Last Friday night saw seven members of the Levin-Waiopehu Tramping Club in the Ohau Hut. Saturday dawned cloudy with the likelihood of rain. Fortunateiy the Ohau River was not as bad as expected and the South Ohau Hut wasreached soon after mid-day, with only a few indulging in winter swimming. After a very welcome "cuppa," the ' party started the steep 600ft ascent above the hut, which gradually became an easy grade. Owing to low cloud no views were obtained. . Te Matawai Hut- was reached by mid-afternoon, where the usual preparation for the evening meal began. Steady rain fell alT night and the track was fairly slippery. The- party left Te Matawai Hut soon after 9 o'clock on • Sunday morning and headed down the track to the Dora Track turn off. From there the party proceeded along and up to Butcher's Saddle and on. to Richard's Knob. The track was rather overgrown and there are numerous trees across the track as thex result of the storm in-1936. From Richards' Knob the party then followed. the Gable End track down to the Ohau Hut, which was reached at 2 p.m. A rtecent working party and a well jdisced track made the journey very enjoyable. After another meal- the last lap was made out to the Pipe Bridge. It was a pity that there was such low visibility and no good views were obtained, but otherwise a very enjoyable weekend was had by all.
