Sequel To Napier Fire.

Arrested following police inquiries into the recent series of fires in a block of wooden buildings in Herschell Street, Napier, Randall Garth Laurent, aged 18 years, a labourer, appeared in the Napier Magistrate's Court on a charge of arson. He was remanded to appear on July 15. Requesting bail, accused's counsel said there was no explanation for the offence, and it was proposed to have accused ex- ' amined by a psychiatrist. The -police stated that other charges were pending. Bail was granted at £100 with a surety of a similar^ amount. Plight Of Mothers. Criticism of the Government on behalf of the mothers of young children was a feature of an address by Dr. A. S. Moody at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Citizens' Day Nursery. "She is kept poor.by the iniquitous rises in the cost' of living under uncontrolled inflation; deprived of help in the home hy high costs and a labour shortage artiflcially brought about through the, f ostering of uneconomic secondary industries; and forced to walk miles pn Fridays (or struggle for breathing space on overcrowded or trams) on her week-end s'hopping expeditions. It is forindeed that the City Council in Dunedin has provided herwith a place where, for a brief time, she can leave her family while she carries out the grim routine the Socialist State has wished on to her," .
