College Shows Up Well In Inter-School Sport
Rugby, basketball and hockey eams from the Horowhenua Col- • ege on Wednesday took part in representative fixtures away from Levin, in most cases with notable success. The coliege rugby first fifteen played its, annual match with Dannevirke, losing by 6 points to 21. The second .fifteen and thirds nlayed Palmerston North _ Technical 'School' at Palmerston 'North, the Seconds winning 8^-6 and the thirds having a thre,e-a',l draw. The basketball A and B teams Played, Palmerston North Technical School, the A's winning 17 — 10 and the- B's 24 — 4. The girls' hockey 'eleven lost to Palmerston NorthTechnical School by three goals to ' eight. . • " - " First Fifteen Game. The first flfteen's rugby match with Dannevirke found ground cmiditions good and the weather fine. It was a fast open game, with Dannevirke fielding a far superior team. * ! ; - 'Uf Dannevirke started off nicely and scored soon after the commencement of the game. . During the first half Dannevirke was muGh superior to Coliege, especially in the back fine. CoTege lacked cohesion and their tackling was weak, particularly in the back line. The half-time score was 21 — 0 in favour of Dannevirke. Coliege warmed up in the? secbnd soell and he'd territorial advantage, the forwards dominating p'av. Coliege notched six points in this half and Dannevirke failed to scnre a.gftin. The game ended 21 — 6. The Colleee's points came from two penafiies taken bv L^ne. Gnodwin and Best were outstanding m the forwards and Lang, the fufiback, played a solid game. Palmerston North Game. . The College's second fifteen played Palmerston North Tech's first fifteen, winning 8 — 6. The Palmerston North team was much the heavier, having the advantage of a stone per man, and in some cases even more. The ground was rather sloppy and considering that Coliege had fighter forwards, thev did well to gain the advantage. The Palmerston North backs handled well for a wet dav, but did not get far, "the Coliege boys continuaPy upsetting them. Palmerston North opened the scoring by sending 'the ball a^ng the back lipe, cutting out one of the Coliege boys, with the result that tfie wing made a good run for the corner to touch down. They failed to. convert-. A auafter of an hour later a dribbling rush by Coliege, ended with Harris scoring. At lialf time the game was even. On' the resumption of play Coliege had territorial advantage and maintained it for 20 out of the 30 minutes. The forwards really dominated Palmerston North's heavier pack and followed- up wefi, with the backs giving what support they could for a wet day. HaT way through the spell, Palmerston .North dropped the hall on the half-way line and Harris and Gates, runrting at fufi speed, toed the ball down the; .line for 25 yards, Gates picking it- up and scoring with practically no opposition. It Was as' firie 'a try as has been seen anywhere, and the speed and tactics which preceded it took the opposition "by surprise. "Wfiliams converted. Palmerston North began pressing hard and once again the wing, by good back movements, scored' in the corner. The kick failed. For the remainder of the spell Cofiege was again" on the attack. The Coliege boys were really in top form and it would be unfair to individualise. All played wefi.
