Placed On Probation For Theft Of Cheque
Eighteen months' probation, on the condition. that he take .out a prohibition order, was the" penaity inflicte'd.on Kiri Kimura, gardener, of Opiki, who pleaded guilty to the theft of a cheque', m the Magistrate's Court, Palmerston North, before Mr. J. R. Hterd, S.M., on Monday. Senior-DefectiVe O. Power stated that on June 3 accused tried to hire a taxi to take him to Opiki and tendered a cheque as payment. The cheque was made out to "A. Gillespie" and was valued at £7 3s 3d. When the taxi proprietor rang Mr. Giliespie to tdieck, accused left the ofiice. It was subsequently learned that the cheque had been posted to Mr. Gillespie from Wellington, but he had never received it. ' When interviewed by the police accused admitted that he had been drinking at the time and said that he had foun'd the cheque on the road near where he worked. He had sighed "A. Gillespie" on the back, but no charge of forgery was being preferred. He was a married man with three children. ■
