Manawatu Bakeries lay Have To Close
Unless the price of "bread is "brought up to the level of present day costs, Manawatu foakers will have to consider closing their bakeries. A special meeting "of Ihe Manawatu Master JBakers' iissociation yesterday supported wholeheartedly the Northland and Frankim bakers in their protests over the present ' 'uneconomic pfice of bread." A statement isaued by the association following the meeting read as follows: "At a special meeting of the association lield in Palmerston North today, it was resolved to suppor.t unanimously the Northland and Franklin bakers in. their efforts to obtain a fair and equitable price for bread., "The position is such that the present price is uneconomic and members feel that if something is not done immediately, serious consideration will have to be giv.en the question of closing down the bakeries. This step is regrettable but as the Government flxed the price of bread in 1936 on the costs' ruling at that time, and because of sevgral irncreases in wages and commodity costs, the bakers cannot earrjr on."
