Coroner Points To Serious Train Danger
CHRISTCHURCH, Jnne 23. "There could be a grave danger of an accident such as this occurring through there being no lavatory on a train," said the coroner, Mr. Rex. C. Abernethy,, at the conclusion of an inquest into the death of Robert Leslie Bowle's, labourer, of Dundas Street, Dunedin, whose body was found in the Lyttelton Tunnel on June 3. The coroner said that local -residents were aware that there were no lavatories on the trains, but strangers might not. This was a danger that should engage the at^ention of the department. / ' Passengers in the carriage in which Bowles travelled from Christchurch at 7.55 a.m. on June 3 gave evidence that Bowles left the carriage and went out on to the platform soon after the train eritere'd. . t , ' The guard, William George Robson, said that there was no lavatory on the train. It was not usual to have lavatories on suburban trains. The coroner's verdict was that Bowles died as a result of beirig run over by the train in which he was travelling, there being no evidence to show that hiis death was other than accidental.
