AUCKLAND" June 20. How a man suspeeted of theft, evaded a policeman by swimming ashore fully elothed, from a ferry steamer at Devonport last evening, was describea in the Police Court to-day. Desmond Alfred Delaney, aged 26, mptor driver, appeared on charges ot assaulting a constable and breaking into a shop and cpmmi'tting theft at Devonport. , Delaney pleaded guilty to the first charge and was remanded for a week on the seeond. The police Sfiid a constable followed accused on to the ferry as it was leaving the wharf. Delaney removed his coat, dived overboard and swam a'shore. When found early to-day and taken to the police station, he beeame violent and butted Deteetive Irving with his head. The deteetive had to be treated at hospital. "I had been drinking and didn't do it intfentionally, " Delaney told the Magistrate, Mr J. Morling. He was convicted and sentenced to one month 's imprisonment for assault.
