Preservation of Gold Coining
LONDON, June 19. An announcement that the Eoy,al Mint will strike a liinited number of eoyereigns in order to preserve ' the craft of gold coining has led to thq disclosure that oqt of the several hundred craftsmen employed at the Mint only six have experience of the exacting standards required in striking go;d coinage. When the new reserve issue of sovereigns is struck, 30 or 40 men wi be, instructed in the various proeesse:. involved. Sovereigns have not been struck for circulation since 1917, and today they command a price of between £6 and £8 eaeh. They were .first struck in the reign of Henry VII, when they were much larger than the present coin and weighed 240 grains. The weight of the present-day' sovereign is 123 grains," and it is guaranteed to be true to this weight to within .2 of a grain.
