» _ Personal. »■ Mrs. B. Hateley, of Mangaore, returned home this morning after spending a holiday with her daughter at Hotorua. \ Mr. L. Spiers, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Spiers, of Sto.ut Street, is among the young farmers who are making a trip to Australia. Mr. Spiers, Junr., is the president of the Moutoa Young Farmers' Club. Mr.. J. Chambers, of Sheehan Street, has recently returned home after spending a holiday at Auckland. Mrs. Chambers has also returned dfter holidaying in the Hutt Valley. The friends of Mrs. P. J. Wright, of Vance Street, will regret to learn that she has had to enter the Palmerston North Hospital for treatment. Mr. T. Nepia, of Stafford Street, is another Shannon resident who is' an inmate of the hospital. * Dairy Company Directorate The following have been nominated for the directorate of the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Company for the coming year: Messrs. G. R. Barnes, R. Hook and H. A. Seifert. As only two vacancies exist on the board, an electionwill be held at the annual meeting of the company next month. The retiring directors are Messrs. R. Hook and W. l. Carter. The latter is not seeking re-election.f Bowling Secretary Honoured Five members of the Shannon Women's Bowling Club, Mesdames C. M. Cronquest, S. L. Graham, S. Laing, W. Tricker and L. Wilson, represented the club at a -".ocial afternoon held at Paln st6n North in honoiir of Miss Underwood, the secretary of the Manawatu Women's Bowling Centre. who is shortly to be married. The local ladies report that there were some 60 women bowlers present ar i a most enjoyable time was spent Representative Badminton Miss J. Pigott and H. Po.pe, two members of the Shannon Badminton Club, competed with success in the recent representative badminton match between Horowhenua and Feilding. . Both were successful in winning their singles and combined doubles. The two local players were included in the team to represent , Horowhenua and Feilding against Wanganui, to be played at Wanganui on Jur ">. It is hoped that Shannon's rep» _,entatives will be seen in action in cup matches played at Wellington later in the season. Business Slackening Local business flr-ms report a general slackening of business over the past few weeks. Although the saies of certain articles decrease somewhat . over the winter months, this is the first occasion that the town has been so quiet. Over 'he King's Birthday weekend and the week prior to the holiday, business was very brisk and the infiux of visitors to the town for the jubilee period tended to increase the revenue of local firms.
