SMALL SHIPS FORCED TO SEEK SHELTER.
CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. Two small ships had to put into bays in Banks Peninsula to shelter from the southerly gale . last night . and this morning the Port Waikato, whieh sailed from Lyttelton on Tuesday night for the Chatham Islands, reported by radio that she was hove-to all last night and with 'everything awash, had decided to seek shelter. She i'eached Pigeon Bay this afternoon and will resume ber vdyage tomorrow morning. Tlfe Ga-le, on her wa/ from Wellington to Dundin, reported by radio that she was going .to put iiito a Banks Peninsula bay for shelter. .No furtlier report has been reeeived from the Gale but it is believed that she put into Little Akaloa. This cannot be confirmed as the telephone line to Little- Akaloa is out of order; The Apanui arrived at Lyttelton this mprning after a rough passage from' Picton. The.iS?oyage took 43 hours and frdm Kaikoiira to Lyttelton .took 26 uoui's.
