Month Of May Was Merry For Traffic Inspector
The "merry month of May" provided the Traffic Inspector C. L. Davis with no end of variety, according to the. monthly. report he presented to the Otaki Borough Council on Wednesday night. Four motorists were prosecuted and also seven cyclists and cne intoxicated driver. A test of car lights . had been carried out and the inspector was pleased to report that the on'y breaches were two cases of faulty headlights and ■'hree with no tail lights burning. Warnings had been issued. Twelve would-be drivers had been tested for licences; dfa this number seven h-d pa^sed.,' .The "driving abilitv of thfe' reifiainder warranted a pass, but lack of' knowledge of the ru'es and regulatiofts ..had seen them held back for a week. InvariabJy the regulations were well known the second time. The wandering slock nuisance was again prevalent and causing not a litt'e concern, -said the inspector. He instanced cases where he had had to drive horses a con- | siderable distance an*d having them 'break back on him, and suggested 'a concentrated effort by the ranger and himself to overcome this nuisance. He had no power to order horses off the unformed foQtpath in front of the Plunket rooms in Hadfiel'd Street. He suggested the footpath be properly formed for the safety of .the mothers and children. The report cpncluded by stating that the pedestrian crossing at the State School main gates "remains an urgent job,' 'as motorists were not paying enough attention -to children when they attempted to cross to the buses.
