Dr. Barnardo's Homes Value Help From N.Z.

^ It was with real gratitude that she thanked the people of New Zealand for their kind gifts of money and clothing to Dr. Barnardo's Homes, says Mrs. E. A. Leighton, of the New Zealand Stitchwell Union, in an appeal for a continuance of this help. "This work was begun by Dr. Barnardo when he was a young medical student in London," continues Mrs. Leighton. "During his 60 years of life he rescued over 60,000 children. It is a great tribute to the splendid foundations which he laid that now over 136,000 have passed through these fine homes. The splendid training given has enabled these one time waifs and strays to become good citizens, they occupy mariy high. positions, and discharge their duties with great credit. "Many have lost their home and one or both parents. I make the strongest appeal for your continued help to this large famPy of over 7000children. ' What a problem to feed and clothe them, yet through all these hard years the motto has been maintained — 'no destitute child ever refused admission.' • "Since 1940 I have sent to London 454 cases containing over 70,000 garments and footwear, soap, toys and used stamps. Very .special thanks is expressed for bolts of material which have been purchased with contributions " of money. Formerly all money was Bent to London, but now they have asked rne to spend money in New Zealand on clothing, owing to shortages at home. "For 32 years I have been doing this work and now appeal to you, with perhaps a deeper desire for your help than e.ver before. We have so much. Britain still is going through hard times. Will you' please help me to continue sending cases of clothing, footwear, soap, toys and used stamps? Over £1,000,000 has to be raised every year to maintain the .homes." , . , ,
