Inadvisable To Cut Street Lighting

He agreed with the Electricity Gontroller, who had stated recently that there was no greater deterrent to crime than adequate street lights, said the nlanaging-secretary, Mr.- R. A. Frederikson, at this week's meeting of the Horowhenua Electric Power Board. He did not think' that there would be an authorisation for the cancellation of street Hghting in order to save power. After all, the consumption of power by street lights was not great. The matter of street lightina-was raised when a' board member asked what the bogrd was going to do'in regard to more street lights. Applications for additional street lights had beencalled for iast year from the varioUs local bodies. The chairman. Mr. T. G. Vincent, said that he had heard some people comment that street lights should be cut off, especially on imoonhght nights, but he, personally, thought that in view of the small amount of power used by them it wou'.d he inadvisable. He did not know that the board could make additions at present, and thought that under the circumstances the board was doing quite well in the matter of street lighting. NOT NEW, BUT "OLD" .The lights being instaPed around the borough at the moment were strictly speaking not new lights but old ones, as they »were some of those ordered by the borough council in response to the board's letter to local bodies last year, said the managing-secretary of the Horowhenua E^ctric Power Board, Mr. R. A. Frederikson, this morning. He was replying to a question by a "Chronicle" reporter. who was enquiring into "the additions - to street light/ at present being made in view of the statement made by the chairman of the board as reportfd above. The borough's requirements of last year would be met at the board's conveniencd but the position in regard to the future was, as the chairman had indicated, uncertain. It was hoticed yesterday that the board had installed two new mercury vapour lierh'ts in Queep Street, one ooposite the Century Hafi and the other riear the Bank of Austra1asia, making for considerable improvement. A number of ordinary street lights were a'so being installed in various parts of the town.
