Fast open football was the order of the day when Hutt Valley High School accounted for Horowhenua College to the extent of 31 points to three at the Levin Park Domain yesterday. The teams were: — Hutt: Hart, Cowie, Miles, Cole, Street, Mason, Gollan, Murray, Borra, Loader, Langdon, Hayne, Humphreys, Brown and Callin. Horowhenua: Lankshear; Roach, Morrison, Goodwin, Wenham, Norton, Best, Geange, Timu, Iin*d, Southcombe, Wereta, Hannan, Lee and Lang. Right from the opening whistie the visitors threw the ball around and on many occasions forwards and backs linked up to make some fine passing movements. A feature of the play was the way in which Hutt forwards followed in the wake of their backs. Street, Cowie and Hart were a'ways 'i-here when. needed, and Street's hgoking was clean and fast in most cases. Borra's passes, a'though sometimes a little wild were in the mairi long and snappy. Loader and Langdon, the two five-eighths, worked together with Langdon in making several penetrating runs. Hayne was inc.ined to fumble, but when he had possession of the ball was always dangerous. Humphreys showed p'enty of pace and tackled well. ' Of the Horowhenua forward, Lankshear, Roach and Norton did some useful work in the tight rucks, while Best and Goodwin were- a menace in loose play. In the backline poor tackling was very much in evidence. Hannan on the wing, if given more opportumties, would have crossed the .line more than once. Unfortunate'y the backs had to play defensive football most of the time, but in this field Lang, the full-tack, had a da.y out. Lang is a cool type of player who wil go a long way in rugby. . His line kicking was equa1 to ariy senior player in the district. ■ . Horowhenua scored their only try v/hen two forwards broke through with the ball at toe. Goodwin gathered it in on the 25-yard line and, after a spirited run, he passed to Best, who was following up fast. 25est jinked his way past Callin and scored between the posts. Although i't was a very easy kick, Lang did not convert. On the whole the game was played at a cracking pace, with Hutt Valley High dominating the scrums and thereby forcing Horowhenua to play a defensive game. Mr. F. G. Carrington ably controlled the game.
