WELLINGTON, JUne 15* "If this sort of thing is permitted to continue, the interests of the Maori race will be seriously prejudiced. . Europeans regard this as a most serious offence, and those who administer .the law must help the elders of the Maori race in their efforts to improve conditions." Mr. Jus.ice Cnrnish made these comments in the Supreme Court to-day in passing sentence of eighteen months' reforma-tive detention on George Paul Smith, aged 25. Maori farm labourer, of Wairoa, who pleaded guilty to a charge of un'awful carnal knowledge of a Maori girl, aged 13. In view of the favourable repor's of the probation officer at Wairoa and Smith's exceTent record in other respects, said -his Honour,. the sentence was lighter than it might otherwise have been.
