• A striking illustration of the immensity of New York. was given to members of the Levin Rotary Club at their luncheon this week by Mr. A. 'H. Thomas, New Zealand personnel manager of the Vacuum Oi Company, who visited the Unitea States this year. He quoted these statistics : — m The, population is 8,000,000 including some 300,000 visitors dai y. • There are 21 bridges into New York, which is on vhe islan-d of Manhattan. o Approximately 24,000 taxis ply the streets day and night for. hire ; 5000 heavy duty lorries leave the city daily, including transporters which carried five or six cars and refrigerated goods. • Thirty big ocean-going liners depart 'daily from the port. 9 A man is employed eight nours a day at the Rockefeller Centre, a 72storey building, solely to pick up chewing gum from the floors. "They need two," added the speaker. • There are 26 tunne's, 50 ferriee and 1900 piers. Furthermore, the 250 miles of subways handle aoout 6,000,000 people daily. e A drive-in bank enab"!es a motorist'to deposit his money and get a receipt from the teller t without leaving his car or even stopping the engine.
