They Are Complete Liars Or Fanatics
Eeceived Sunday 11 p.m. • .SYDNEY^, June 12. The possibilities of war had recederi even further than tlvey were 12 months ago, said Mr Chifley when 'addressing the annual . conferenee . of the New South" Wa'les branch of the Australian Labour Partv to-day. However, added Mr Chifley, there was a great economic conflict and to hundreds of millions of people the economic pro'blem was more acute to-day than ever before. Mr Chifley said he had never believed and still did not believe that Russia or the people who guided Russia's destinies, would be so foolish as to want another war. Still, it ratlier bewildered him at times to find in Anstalia poeple who believed tliere was a system in Russia which would bring bel ter conditions than already existed in Australia. He believed it would take Russia another 50 years to catch up with the standard of living enjoyed 111 Australia. People who thought that some system behind the iron curtain could bring better conditions than existed in Australia, were complete fanatics or complete liars. Mr Chifley said part of the economic conflict was due to the increasing popu lation of the world which ereated the problem of providing a standard of living to which the teeming millions in the East were entitled. The Labour movement had struggled to give- the people of Australia equality and opportunity and a decent standard of living. The struggle to do this had only just begun in Asia where there was a great up-surge of nationalism. Tho Commun^ts were not helping but were hindering this development.
