Strong Overseas Challenge For Wimbledon Tennis
Received Friday, 7 p.m. LONDON, June 10: The overseas challenge at this year's Wimbledon) is oue of the strongest for years. Slightly less than one-third othe men competing in the singles championship come from the United Kingdom and only half tlie women competing for the women 's singles. Among 59 pairs aeeepted for the men 's doubles, there are only 13 from the United King i dem. Leading Ameriean competitors, in order of their ranking in the United States, are Gonzales, Schroeder, Parker, Falkenburg (present . holder of the ineh's singles title), Cochell, Mulloy and Patty. The four leading Austra lians are Sedgman, Bromwich, Brown and Worthiiigton. Their chief rivals will be Drobny of Czechoslovakia, (Stur ges, of South Africa, and Cucelli, of Italy. Sturges recently defeated Gon zales, the Ameriean champion, in the .final of the Duteh hard court champion ships, and is regarded as probably the strongest of the noitAmerican challeng ers at Wimbledon.
