When Alexander Davey, managing director of a X-ondon firm of wine and spirit merchants, was' fined £500 at Bow'Stre6t for selling spirits with a Scotch wMsky label when tho spirit sold was "not -in £act" whisky,- 'defending counSel contended" that thefe had never been" a legal deflnition :o£ whisky. Whisky was merely a portabl© spirit which was pleasing to taste and which had a popular market but which had. nothihg to do with either Seotland or Ireland. The Magistrate, Mr. A. A. Perexra, saih: " Whatever whisky is I ara satified that what was sold in this bottle was not blended whisky. The label was calculated to deceive and was a dlraud upon the. public. In addition to the fine imposed upon * the managingrdirector, the firm was also fined £500 and ordered to pay 150 guineas costs. . o : * 2
