Need Seen For Urgent Work At Waterworks
"Overnight Levin could he withmt water. It's as serious as that," said Cr. A. W. Farton when emphasisting at Wednesday's meeting of the Levin Borough Council the position of the town's waterworks as he sa>w it. He was commenting on tlje state of the intake tunnel, which he described as likely to be blocked with silt and dangerous to anyone attempting. to clear it.
Mr. Parton suggested that the council take , immediate steps to cndeavour to arrange for an engiaeer to advise the council on the following recommendations : — (ai The ' provision of a new weir ana .ntake tunnel, to lay an 18-inch main through the tunnel and ccnaect with the present main, supplementing the 15-mch main with an idditional pipe line and proyiding a new 500,000-gallon holding tank at Smith's corner; (b) the provi,ion of a water tower with approximate cost inclusive of pumping and maintenanee; (c) the sinMng of a vell or wehs close to .the 500,000ga'lon tank with probable ccst and maintenanee; (d) the location and onstruction of a new supply frcm ohe Makaretu Stream to the 500,000-gallon tank; (e)' the construction of a dam at the present ntake and laying of an -18-irich nain through the .'tunnel and supplementing the present main to he tank; (f) or any other metho.d jO arrange for a clean and adequate supply for the borough. The council -decided to refer Cr. Parfon's suggestions. to the works committee.
